[1] The Bullpen by Ryan Brewster
This issue is a tad brief because of CBN's ongoing changes...
Because of the closing of Ed Dukeshire's Arkham Asylum BBS, we've had to
find some new guys to take care of figuring out the weekly conference
totals, hatching the CBN E-Mag every week and all that fun stuff.
Suffice it to say that the net is not slowing down, it is merely in
a state of transition, and right now, we're experiencing some "growing
pains". We've still got tons of news and all that fun stuff for you
this week!
Best,

[2] CSNsider #442 by W. Batty and C. Biggers
This is the CSNsider from CSN #442, which will be in shops on 12/7/95.
It is reproduced in its entirety with the expressed permission of
COMIC SHOP NEWS!
The long-awaited all-new Art Adams Monkeyman and O'Brien is still a ways
away, but Dark Horse is offering a collection of previously-published
Monkeyman and O'Brien short pieces in February...
The Fox-TV Generation X live-action film will star Matt Frewer, Finola
Hughes, and a cast of relative newcomers who will portray the GenX mutants...
Will superhero licensing move in a new and unexpected direction in '96?
Could be -- at least if current talks are any indication!...
At long last, Gladstone will begin publication of the The Carl Barks Library
of Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge Adventures In Color beginning in February;
this full-color fifty-six volume graphic novel series will present the
entire Scrooge canon chronologically in beautiful computer color....
22 Brides, a new Ash spinoff miniseries about a group of very deadly ladies,
begins in March; the series is co-plotted by Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti,
written by Fabian Nicieza, and illustrated by Scott Lee...
Steven Spielberg has signed on as director of Lost World, the sequel to
Jurassic Park...
Alan Moore and Dave Johnson are working on an issue of WildCATs ...
Antarctic Press's Furrlough #37, due out in January, will be a special benefit
issue for artist Mel White, whose home suffered severe damage in a fire in
late August; after printing and artists' royalties are paid, all profits
will be donated to Mel and her family to help them recover from the loss...
Aliens Vs. Predator: Booty, the story by Barbara Kesel and Ron Randall
currently being serialized in Diamond Previews, will be collected in
one-shot format in early '96...
The CSNsider is just a small part of each issue of Comic Shop News.
CSN #442 features Armed & Dangerous from Acclaim Comics on the cover as well
as more news.
The CSNsider is now available via e-mail! In order to subscribe to CSNsider,
send a message to majordomo@redweb.com, with a single line message saying:
SUBSCRIBE csnsider
Visit our WWW site!
http://www.actwin.com/csn
We post the new CSNsider there each Monday or Tuesday and it will go out via
e-mail each Wednesday or Thursday. The WWW site is still the first place it
will appear each week, but we wanted to offer it via e-mail as well.
The only way to get Comic Shop News is to visit a shop that carries CSN.
The publication costs the shops just a dime each and is generally free to
customers. If your shop doesn't carry CSN, nag 'em until they do. After
all, isn't your business and satisfaction worth a dime a week?

1. A Note from the Editor ----------------------------------------------
As a rule, I will attempt to write at least one editorial and at least
five reviews a week... This week, neither of those happened. :(
Comicunications will ALWAYS have news, though.
In the event that I write MORE than one editorial in one week, I will
print both editorials in that week's re-cap... The next week will most
likely not have either.
Just to let you know what's going on in the land of little rhyme, and
VERY little reason, that is my mind. :)
Best,

2. Industry News -------------------------------------------------------
Oklahoma Comics Hearings Update:
11/7/95 - A bomb scare at the courthouse where Planet Comics owners John
Hunter and Michael Kennedy were to attend their pre-trial delayed the hearing
a half-hour. The owners were informed that there would be no plea bargaining
and that their trial date is set for January 26, 1996 at 9:00am. A
representative from a right wing religious group was present at the hearing.
The District Attorney's office will require 1/2 day to present their case
against the owners of Planet Comics, and will call three witnesses, while
the owners' attornies will require a full day to present their defense. The
Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is working with the attornies to find
witnesses to defend the books in question: Verotica #4, Mighty Morphing Rump
Rangers, Screamers #2, Sex Wad #2, Devil's Angel, Vipor Series Sketch Book,
Nefarismo #5, and Beatrix Dominatrix #2.
The District Attorney's office was surprised to see the extent of the
defense that the owners had in court for the pre-trial hearing, according to
the comic shop owners.
The Vice Squad raided Planet Comics in Oklahoma City, on an anonymous
complaint about Verotika #4, on September 6th, 1995. The owners face
penalties of 86 years in jail and $100,000 in fines from an eight-count
indictment filed on October 12, 1995.
The indictment includes:
- Two counts of Distribution of Obscene Materials [Verotika #4].
- Three counts of Selling Obscene Materials [Verotika #4, Mighty Morphing
Rump Rangers, Viper Series Official Art Book].
- One Count of trafficking in obscene materials [Screamers #2, Sex Wad #2,
Nefarismo #5, Beatrix Dominatrix #2].
- One Count of Child Pornography [Devil's Angel].
- One Count of Displaying Materials Harmful to Minors [Verotika #4].
Sophistikats Sold to Coconut:
11/21/95 - Silk Purrs Press has granted Coconut Comics the rights to publish
the characters of The Sophistikats indefinitely. Beginning this coming
April, the characters will appear as a back-up feature in the bi-monthly
superhero comic, Warcat. They will also appear in their own series of
specials for Valentine's Day, Halloween, Christmas, and a Summer Swimsuit.
The characters will cross over with another famous crew of funny animals in
their first special.
The regular creative team on The Sophistikats will remain writer Paul
Castiglia, penciller Brigitte Sleiertin and inker Mark Morales (Lady
Death).
The Sophistikats were created by Castiglia, Sleiertin and Don Newcom.
Carnage Reigns in December:
11/14/95 - Carnage, one of the more violent of Spider-Man's foes, will
appear in his own 32-page one-shot, Carnage: Mindbomb. The one-shot will
ship in December, and will be written by Warren Ellis and drawn by Kyle
Hotz.
Marvel Stock Down:
11/21/95 - The 67% drop in Marvel Entertainment's stock price since 1993
prompted an article in the November 21st issue of the Wall Street Journal.
The article on page C2 talked about Marvel's falling, and links it to
Perelman's & William Bevins' neglect of "the basic comic books to capitalize
on a brief frenzy of collector comiocs" and on the Image defection.
Justice League Changes:
11/13/95 - An unconfirmed report on rec.arts.comics.misc claims that the
three Justice League books (Extreme Justice, Justice League: Task Force and
Justice League of America) are being collapsed into one book: Justice League
America, to be written by Grant Morrison.
DC reportedly has a number of books in preparation, and are focusing on
diversifying their line.
Cartoonist Releases Single:
11/1/95 - Joe Martin, creator of the Mr. Boffo and Willie & Ethyl comic
strips, is rumored to be releasing a humorous Christmas single entitled "My
Dream of Christmas".
Death Obscene?:
11/21/95 - A Florida Police Detective has requested that a comic shop remove
a number of items from their shelves. Among them was Neil Gaiman's "Death:
The High Cost of Living" TPB, which contained a safe sex back-up feature.
New E-Zine Hits the Web:
11/22/95 - A new electronic magazine covering the comic industry has
launched on the World Wide Web. Comics World E-Zine, featuring news,
articles, reviews and contests, can be found at http://www.comicsorld.com/.
Windsor-Smith Cancels Con:
11/21/95 - Barry Windsor-Smith has cancelled his planned appearance at thie
year's Mid-Ohio-Con, due to a serious illness.
Rerun Rights Sold:
11/7/95 - Turner Network Television has bought the exclusive rights to rerun
episodes of Lois & Clark: the New Adventures of Superman, and Babylon 5.
Turner recently merged with Time Warner, the media giant behind DC Comics.
Archie Takes a Break:
11/22/95 - In addition to other seasonal titles (Archie's Christmas
Stocking, Archie's Winter Vacation and Archie's Summer Vacation), Archie
Comics will introduce Archie's Spring Break Special to its line-up of
titles.
In the first 48-pg special to ship 3/5/96, Mr. Weatherbee and Ms. Grundy
will chaperone the Riverdale teens, who invade Florida on their spring
vacation. Script and art on the $2.00US/$2.50Can title will be provided by
Bill Golliher and Dan Parent.
Dawn #1 Sells Out:
11/12/95 - Dawn #1 by Joseph Michael Linsner has sold out of its 158,000
printed copies shortly after becoming available for reorder. Dawn #1 was
Serius's first title to reach the top 10-selling comics from both Diamond
and Capital.
El Kabong Returns:
11/22/95 - El Kabong, who is really Quick Draw McGraw, will return with his
sidekick Baba Looey this March in Hanna-Barbera All-Stars #5. The story will
feature the return of the masked hero, and will reveal his "origin" for the
first time.
The 32-page title will ship March 26th, 1996, and will carry a
$1.50US/$1.65Can price tag. Bill Vallely will write the script with Bill
White and Jorge Pacheco providing the artwork.
Shi Revised TPB To Ship Early:
11/16/95 - Shi Revised Trade Paperback, originally solicited to ship in
January, will ship by December 15th. The first four issues of the popular
indepentent title Shi from Crusade Comics, are reprinted in the TPB along
with previously unpublished artwork, added text and a forward by Chris
Claremont. The first edition of the TPB sold out in December 1994.
The $14.95 revised edition features a new painted cover by Julie Bell and the
fan appreciation edition of Shi #2.

[4] Comic Comments, by John Keady
Superboy #23
What makes this book as good as it is is the developement of the characters.
In few books have there been as many people that I really want to know
about. This nearly tops that list. Knockout is quickly becoming one of my
favorite supporting characters in all the comics I read. It seems pretty
obvious that Knockouts past is coming back to haunt her and soon we'll see
what the consequences of her running are going to be!
Superman MOS #52
The Trial of Superman seems to be winding down as Supes & Cyborg battle
and the ending suprised me to some degree. It would seem that the Super
books have returned to their former glory after about a year and a half
of pretty bad material....I'm glad to see that happening!

[5] New Comics, Week Of 11/27/95, by Bobb Waller
Well it's Firday and I just NOW got a fax of what is scheduled to ship next

Fax board, and then printed out! So it is all but illegible. So this week due
to a screwup in filling our packet by Diamond I will merely list titles, and
numbers will be added when I can decipher them, (No Companies!)
I don't even hope to get 50% of the titles right! Anyway, Onto the list!

[7] Join in the fun!
You too can enjoy the intelligent conversations and informative threads
that occupy the conferences of the Comic Book Net every day! However,
many people who read this e-mag aren't familiar with the Local BBS
echo-mail system....
Bulletin Board Systems are scattered everywhere across the USofA, and
many of them are free! Chances are, if you have a modem you have
the accompanying communications software. Using the Terminal Emulation
software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the many
systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs). Most
of the boards offer all the message echoes in the Comic Book Network...
there are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as
well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention
sections for general (doesn't even have to be about comics!)
conversation.
If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most
if not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download
a .QWK packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called
an offline mail reader. You can read & write messages at your leisure,
and then upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your
local BBS. There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every
type of computer system. They all give you a better explaination in
their documentation than I can. These programs are available all over
the Internet and are downloadable from most BBS's.
These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading
replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the
average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is
LESS THAN 75¢! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial
information services available! :)
So what else can you find on free BBS systems? Theres plenty of files
for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types
of message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes
like sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget
online games. Join into the many different multiplayer games, each
system sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming
the most powerful being in a online adventure!
And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to
ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of
replies and all the help you need to join in the fun!
Best,
--Ry, the editor, with assists from Ed Dukeshire.
